Absolutely!

Most of the turkeys I have killed in years past were with the same shells I used for squirrel hunting ---- just high-brass #5 or #6 shot. In Kansas, they called them "pheasant" shells; in TN, we called them "squirrel" shells. \:\)
And before lead shot was outlawed for waterfowling, many Tennessee hunters just called them "heavy" loads, buying a case of these every year, using them for rabbits, ducks, and squirrels. Then you had your "light" loads for doves & quail.

At 35 yards or less, it may not matter much at all what shells you are using. At 40 yards, I generally wouldn't want anything with shot smaller than #6 (although nickel-plated #7 1/2's might suffice to 40 yards). But a #6 lead shot is a #6 lead shot, no matter whether it's called a "pheasant", a "squirrel", or a "turkey" load (mainly for marketing purposes).

It's my opinion that most turkeys are killed at under 35 yards, and it's a fact I've killed most of mine at under 30 yards --- so there may be other factors in turkey hunting that are more important than the particular shells, the particular choke, or the particular gun you are using.

Enjoy using what you have, and realize you have little disadvantage if you don't have the most modern "turkey" gun and shells.

well im gonna have to check what # and "material" the shot i have at home is... the guys at work are wanting me to get an actual turkey gun (which i may still very well do) but its nice to know that i could use my current gun if all else fails... my buddy said that pheasant load would only be lethal out to 15yrds or so on a turkey....?

My son hs the exact same thing. He has a Rossi 20-Ga with a Modified barrel.
We shot it this evening and I think he is deadly out to 25-yds, maybe a little farther. We used 3" Remington Nitro #4.
The gun actually has alot more kick than I expected. Especially with these loads. He was brave and shot 5 times.

Thanks for all the opinions. I was at the local ammo dealer today and he had some 3" 20 gauge Win. Supreme Elite Ext. Range #5's. I bought a box to try and here are the results:

This target is 20 yards. 29 pellets in the head and neck. At 25 yards the pellet count in the head and neck dropped to 15. I think I will limit him to 25 yards and hope we can get a 20 yard shot. What do you think?

I think you might have better luck & be cheaper to try the Federal shells with the Flight Control wads. The wads are made to stay with the shot longer giving you a little more range.... couldn't hurt to try a box....

My nephew has the same Rossi 20ga. Mod. fixed choke. I took him last weekend to pattern it. We shot one shot with the Remington #5 shot. It looked pretty good at 30 yards. But, he complained about the recoil. I let him rest a few minutes and tried the same load in the Winchester brand and he flinced so badly only about half the load even hit the paper. So I think I will take him to the High brass #6's in 2 3/4 we used for squirrel hunting. I'm thinking the Mod. choke is going to limit us to about a 25 to 30 yard shot. So, the lighter loads should be fine at that distance and he won't have to hurt so much (read flinch).
