By FAR, the best week of the season is the second week of April. Birds have definetly broken up from winter flocks and are most vulnerable to calling.
That being said, I gave the second week up a few years ago simply because so many birds were killed opening week leaving around half the number of birds to chase by the second week. For that reason, I always hunt the opener now. But it's a gamble... a cold, late winter could potentially result in a complete bust, though.
That's also why I'm a little pissed about them screwing with opening week dates and opening the season the earliest it has ever opened since I've been hunting. So much for tying the opener to the 'saturday closest to April 1'...

I'm sure it is different in other areas but the first week in May is always awesome for me. I always kill a lot of birds during mid April but for whatever reason I have killed a longbeard during the last weekend of the season for the last 9 years.

Since 1988.
Season has never been tied to the last weekend in March... until THIS year. For some reason, the season opening dates were changed last fall.
Season has always opened 'the saturday closest to April 1' which is sometimes in March, sometimes in April. This is the EARLIEST opening day of turkey season on record. They way the season has been set in years past, season would have opened April 4 this year.
The biggest problem with dates so early is that the season opens before most hens have been bred...not a problem if multiple gobblers are in an area, but in sparsely populated areas could result in removal of the males before breeding.

I love it opening the last weekend in March.I hate when it opens in April.like bigdog said it always seemed to open in March before the juv. hunt.i voted for juv. to get first crack but there was nothing in there about us starting later in the year some years.
