My 10 year old will be going on his first turkey hunt in a couple weeks. He has a Rossi single shot 20 gauge with a modified choke barrell (not a screw in choke). It will shoot 3 or 2 3/4 shells. If any of you have shot a 20 with mod. choke, what shells worked well? What was the effective range? Obviously, I am going to pattern shoot the gun, but looking for some tips. Thanks!

Try the Federal shells with the Flight Control wads. I would say it would be good out to 25-30 yards.

every gun is different, for a 20 i'd try win.supreme #4 shot.
That bird really needs to be in at least 30 yards anyways for most 20's jmo. So i'd be more concerned with the setup than the shell. If he's alittle shy of the shells, i'd let him shoot the 2 3/4 to practice and slip in a 3 for the hunt.He will never notice if he's shootin at a gobbler!

You might look at the hevi-shot #6's. You will get more pellets and more downrange energy from them. I don't think it is necessary in a 12 ga. but in a 20 ga. it should help, especially with a modified choke.

I shoot Winchester Supreme loads out of my 20 ga, and it will rock a bird out to 30 yards. Maybe further, I just have never pushed it. I also shoot a kicks choke.

Many of the 12 ga offerings are simply not available in 20 ga. with some of the more popular "turkey" loads. Among them, the Winchester Supremes are available in a pretty "hot" turkey load.

But going to steer you in a little different direction since you have a "modified" choke:

Go with smaller shot, so you'll get a denser pattern.

Consider these nickel-plated #7 1/2 "Pheasant" loads from Fiocchi. Due to the hard nickel plating, good velocity, I believe these particular #7 1/2's would have adequate energy to take down a turkey out to 40 yards, and just possibly enough density for a high-probability shot even out to 40 yards with a modified choke ---- you'll only find out by pattern testing them.

Best of all, they are "cheap" compared to most "turkey" loads.
Price is for a box of 25.

These 20 ga. loads are available in a 2 3/4" 1 oz, or a 3" 1 1/4 oz.
$17.49 for a box of 25, and will also double as a good squirrel shell.

Other than the Fiocchi's, I believe you'd have to load your own or custom order to get nickel-plated shot.
Here' what the Nitro Custom Ammo Company says regarding nickel:
. . . . . the choice of nickel or copper plated shot. Nickel shot penetrates deeper because it is harder and stays more round at longer distances . . . . nickel shot penetrates deeper because it will not pull feathers. Copper deforms more and loses its pattern at longer range.

My little brother uses a mossberg 500 20g and shoots the winchester supreme #5 shot. He's deadly out to 45 yards, but this is with a turkey choke.

I have a Winchester model 120 youth model 20 gauge that has a modified barrel on it. My nephew used it last year to kill his first turkey. Shot it at appx. 20 yards. I know my brother used 3" shells and I believe he used Winchester Supremes.

I'd speculate that inexperienced (or youth) turkey hunters might actually INCREASE their odds at bagging a called up turkey by using a plain old "Modified" choke rather than an ultra-tight "turkey" choke.

The advantages of a basketball size pattern vs. a baseball size one have become quite apparent to even many experienced turkey slayers when they have just flat out missed a turkey's head at 20 yards. \:\)

Just order some of those Fiocchi "pheasant" shells in 2 3/4 inch, or go somewhere, anywhere, other than Wal-mart, and you can find some 2 3/4-inch high brass 20 gauge shells.

You should have no problem finding these in #6 shot, although without ordering, you may have a problem finding in the preferred copper (or nickel) plated shot.
