We could make a long list of long range guns. I just picked up a 270 for a good long range west tn rifle. I considered a 308. I got a good deal on the 270 and it shoots alittle flater.

I find it hard to leave my .300 in the case. My .308 is my all around gun.

25-06 is what I have used in Hardeman for years. Best bullet for this gun IMO is the Win silver tip 115 grain. Killed deer out to 340.
In the same league for a mid long range non magnium caliber Id ad the 270, 280, and 308. There are a bunch more that will do the job. 250 really isnt that long of a shot for most modern calibers.

25-06 is a bad round. I believe it's one of the fastest rounds out right now.
.270 is a great gun for up to 300 yards. plenty of punch and relatively low cost to shoot.

thanks for advice. I currently shoot .270 and passed on 10 pointer this year at 200 yds but after reading posts on here I gained confidence and got a second change at 210 yds and dropped him. I was debating on another .270 or 7mag???

a 270 will cover alot more than 300 yds. i personally have 2 kills with a 270 over 400 yds. the best caliber is the one that you shoot well. just don't fall into the "if it ain't a magnum, it ain't sh*t" trap. there is no need for a magnum rifle.

Anything with a 25 in it is good...I would prefer in this order...
.25 .257 WTHBY MAG .25-06
.25 is the flatest calliber out there right now...I personaly shot a Weatherby Mark V in a .257 WTHBY MAG...Love it but I really want a .25
IMO

I LOVE the 243 for deer but when you get out near 300yds you better put it in the perfect spot. There is not much power in that round at that distance. I have a 270 and a 243 but hunt with the 243 90% of the time.
hear a lot of very good things about the 7mm-08 25-06

Most guys I know couldn't hit a paper plate at 300 yards regardless of the caliber. Of course they are "killers" within 100 yards.
All these calibers are good and time tested, all are worthless without practice.

.243 is too light for 300yds. It will kill but so will a 204. 25-06 is too light. Yes again it will kill but is not the best idea at that range. Anything from a 240 Weatherby to 300 anything. Yes the 240 mag is slightly lighter but it is a Weatherby magnum so it has the knockdown power. I use 3 Weatherbys: 240, 270 & 300. All will kill out to 400 cleanly in 1 shot. I have shot my 240 out to 400+ and killed my biggest deer yet this past season with it. It was well past 400. My 270 has hit and one-shot killed at 405. My 300 several between. 250-350. I shoot long range for practice...alot. It is difficult and expensive but it really does pay off. I also use a 444, 308, have used a 8mm and am going to try my S&W model 29-3 again this fall. Killed a doe just under 100 yds with the 44. I have also killed deer with my 243, but under 250 and under. Killed the most with my 308 as I have had it the longest. Basically it depends on you. Do you like power? More to the real point is what can you handle? You should be able to shoot a whole box and get consistent kill shots out of the next 5 out of a new box. The first shot is what counts so too much powder/power can cause flinching. Find something that you cam honestly handle and practice. I have also owned and hunted with a 6.5x55. Good round for 250 and less. I have a 30-06 but it is a collector piece so I have never sjhot it.

The 25-06 is too light for 300 yards? I guess that why its the most popular pronghorn round out there where shots are regularly taken way past 300 yards. You do not need a magnum to kill game at 300 yards, you just need to be able to place your shot.

.243 is too light for 300yds. The 25/06 is not a magnum in name but it is really a magnum without a belt. Locksley
So the 270 Win. and the 30-06 are also a magnum without a belt?
The 25-06 is a 30-06 case necked down to a 25 cal.

Locksley So the 270 Win. and the 30-06 are also a magnum without a belt? The 25-06 is a 30-06 case necked down to a 25 cal. The 25 calibers are way over bore with that much powder . The larger 27 and 30 calibers not so much so. The Europeans would call the 30/06 or the 270 Winchester an Express caliber which is perty much a magnum. 7.62 X 63 MM is about one of the most powerful military calibers ever used by any country. We never lost a war while useing the big 30 caliber rifles either. Locksley the .25-06.
The cartridge has mild recoil, somewhat below the .270 Winchester but more than the .243 Winchester and .257 Roberts. Shooters who are recoil sensitive will find the recoil from the 25-06 bearable, but not pleasant enough to shoot all day long. This cartridge is nearly as powerful as the .257 Weatherby Magnum, usually running 100-150 ft/s. slower with a given bullet weight.
SAAMI pressure limit for the .25-06 is 63,000 PSI. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/25-06 The .30-06 Springfield cartridge (pronounced “thirty-aught-six” or "thirty-oh-six") or 7.62 x 63 mm in metric notation, was introduced to the United States Army in 1906 (hence “06”) and standardized, used until the 1960s and early 1970s. It replaced the .30-03, 6 mm Lee Navy and .30 US Army (also called .30-40 Krag). The .30-06 remained the US Army's main cartridge for nearly 50 years before it was finally replaced by the 7.62 x 51 mm (7.62x51mm NATO, commercial .308 Winchester). It remains the most popular big-game cartridge in North America, and among the most popular worldwide. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.30-06_Springfield

Can't go wrong with a 30-06!
But a 270 WIN shoots faster, flatter, farther, less kick, and just as effective at the terminal end.
The 30-06 is probably the most versatile of all rifles for all of North America, but it's probably not the best at anything.

jakeway i pulled up rems balistics on the 2,i dont see no whuppin by the 270,...
Well, this has been one of the longest arguments, and that's what makes it fun. (I hope this is taken in a spirit of fun, as it was meant.)
I never used the term "whuppin". The difference in most deer hunting calibers isn't really all that great. The way I define "better" is the total package, not just one measurement like KE. Here's how I see it:
1) pick the bullet you'd like to use to do the actual killing. Look at the construction, weight, ballistic coefficient. Then pic klthe appropriate weight for the two cartridges being considered. In this example, lets hypothetically pick the 130 grain .277 and the 165 gr .308.
2) look up the ballistics tables for the expected velocities of the powder of your choice and the length of barrel in your rifle.
3) Check the trajectories, Point blank range for that bullet/velocity combo, KE, and recoil measurements for the two cartridges. WIth the above mentioned loads, both sighted at 200 yards, the 270 drops 7.1" to the 30/06 8.0". That might not seem like much, but if you sight with Point Blank Range criteria, the PBR of the 270 is 20 to 30 yards farther. That helps a lot when you don't have time to laser sight the target.
4) Since "dead is dead", the KE is the least importance to me of the above measurements, as long as they are both well within the acceptable range for deer. I consider 1100 Ft lbs as the minimum. The 270 has 1565 ft lbs at 300 yards, the 30/06 has 1777; a good hit with either cartridge will be a killer, probably a pass through, so it's a wash in my book.
Given these criteria, I think that the .270 is "better" than the 30-06 because it brings the bullet to the target with adequate energy and with a longer Point Blank Range (the distandce at which I can hold dead on and still hit +/- 3" of point of aim) with significantly less recoil.
For where I hunt, all things considered, my 260 REM is "better" than my .270. That's why I carry the 260 and not the 270 most of the time. So for those conditions, the 260 REM is "better" than the 30/06 too. It kills the deer dead in their tracks with half the recoil in a rifle weighing only 7 pounds with scope.
In other conditions, such as where bear are present and KE becomes much more important, than the 30/06 might be "better".
If your definition of "better" is different than mine, have at it. That's what makes this country free.

I am seriously looking at the 308 Marlin express or the 338 Marlin express. They are both lever guns but the performance is very interesting. The 338 is pretty close to a 30-06 and the 308 express close to the regular .308. I never would have thought you could get this range from a lever action. I am a bit sceptical until more of the rifles are sold because of ammo availability. Out of all the calibers mentioned above there isn't a bad one.

Stuck on the 7MM REM MAG Like many of the other calibers it can reach out and touch them or you can knock em down close up. Never have blasted any meat like some would think it would do.

I haven't ever loaded a deer that was TO_DEAD to ride in my truck....So I like Foot Pounds of energy, even at long distances, So I shoot the .300 mag on most trips, no other caliber that is feasable for deer delivers the punch down range the .300 (any one you like) does....
I do use the ole 30-06 in the heavy brush though

25-06 is a bad round. I believe it's one of the fastest rounds out right now.
.270 is a great gun for up to 300 yards. plenty of punch and relatively low cost to shoot. A 270 Cal. is a faster shooting gun,and a flatter shooting gun than the 25-06.so the 25-06 is not the fastes gun out there

Most guys I know couldn't hit a paper plate at 300 yards regardless of the caliber. Of course they are "killers" within 100 yards.
All these calibers are good and time tested, all are worthless without practice. I agree 100 percent with you on this.Practice is the best thing, and you guys got to remember shot placememt.

I'll put my .25-06 up against your .270 any day as far as trajectory is concerned. ok look at this . A 120 grain 25-06 bullet and a 130 grain 270 bullet. The closest i could find to compare.I will list the 270 first in numbers then the 25-06. Here is the long range trajectory. 270 at 100 yrds 1.5 25-06 1.6. at 150 yards they are the same at 1.4 at 200yards they both are at zero. at 250 yrds they both are at- 2.8 .at 300 yrds the 270 at - 7.0 the 25-06 at -7.2 at 400 yrds the 270 at -20.9 the 25-06 at -21.4 at 500 yrds the 270 at -43.3 the 25-06 at -44.1. Short range the 270 out performs it a little also. ok Energy (ft- lbs) 270 at muzzle 2702 ,the 25-06 2382 .at 100 yards 270 2225 ,25-06 1985 .At 200 yards 270 ,1818 ,25-06 1644. at 300 yards 270 1472 , 25-06 1351. At 400 yards 270 at1180. 25-06 at 1100. ok and at 500 yards 270 at 936. the 25-06 at 887. If you don't beleive me go to a ballistics chart and compare the same. So how can you say the 25- 06 out performs the 270. when it does'nt.Not knocking anyone gun. They both are good, but what you said is'nt true.

NOt very many people shoot a 120 grain 25-06 bullet, so that is why they get the idea it is a better round because they are shooting a 100 grain or lower therefore they are getting a flatter shot but sacrificing energy. I see your point and thanks for posting it hpdi200, but what about a 300 WSM or 270 WSM, as far a data concerns arent they at the top of the list as far as flattest shooting while also keep good energy levels.

A 270 Cal. is a faster shooting gun,and a flatter shooting gun than the 25-06.so the 25-06 is not the fastes gun out there I have to disagree with you, 200. Less than an inch difference at 500 yards??? They're pratically dead even!! And don't lecture me on not knowing the facts, Spike!

the better question is best caliber for enviroment because there are dozens of very good calibers to kill deer, but certain calibers would work better in hardwoods and thick stuff as opposed to hunting wide open flat land, my personal preference is 25.06, its a very fast consistent bullet if hand loaded with the 117 grain boat tail and inflicts a quick clean kill.

30-06 will kill them @ 1yd, 30-06 will kill them @ 800yds.So will every other deer round. You are asking an irrelevant question that no one here can answer. Get to a range, find a gun that fits right w/recoil you can handle in a price(rifle, ammo, scope) you are comfortable with and go have fun killin some deer.

I'd recommend a 270 WIN if you are regularly shooting 250-350 yards. If the vastr majority of your shots are less than 250 yards, with an occasional 300 yard shot, I'd go with 260 REM.
I'd only recommend a 30-06 if you really did go after elk occasionally. If strictly deer hunting, no reason to go with anything other than the first two I mentioned.
Unless, of course, you like the other ones. I have no right to tell anyone that their favorite color shouldn't be blue, it should be aqua-marine.

260,270,30/06,etc which one is the best, none of them are calibers, so none of them answered his question, and none of them are the best caliber.

It is all about shot placement and your personal comfort with the weapon. I prefer 7MM Mag. I've never had one go more than 50 yds but I also like to knock out their front running gears or add a little distance between their ears and eyes.

Good point! Technically, the caliber is the diameter of the bullet. So I'd say the best caliber for TN deer, is the .264 or 6.5mm. Good SD and BC, plenty of weight, Mfg, and construction options.
You decide if the cartridge would be 260 REM, 6.5 X 55 Swede, 260/06, 264 WIN Mag, ...

i have hunted with the 270 for 33 years or so of my 34 + years of hunting 98% of the time.....I love the 270 and it is my first choice. i have killed with the 243 and the 308 and i can tell you the 308 is dandy. i dont prefer the 243 for deer but it is a killer. ....just my personal pref. use what you feel you will love...as for me and jack oconner we were joined at the hip when i read his first column touting the 270 and its performance and i have always been inlove with it. I now have the 270 wsm and i expect the love to expand......

So Im new to deer hunting. I bought a T/C Omega Z5 last year to use for ML and Gun season because I could only get one gun, and it would do both seasons. Now I'd like to get a 308 Win due to the vast selections of 30 caliber bullets for reloading, making it suitable to hunt large game, varmints and target shooting. However, I'm surprised that no one listed a 30-30. Does anybody use this round? I've found some good deals on used guns, and to my understanding, with modern ammunition this is a good 200 yd gun.

The 30-30 is a very popular round, and in it's day it was the top of the heap. But in today's world, with dozens of redundant cartridges out there, the 30-30 is just empirically at the bottom of the heap.
If you want a lever gun, which requires a rimmed cartridge, then there are only a handful of cartridge choices. Still, a few of them are head and shoulders above the 30-30 ballistically.
If money is tight, get a Savage or a Marlin XS7 in 260, 7mm-08, or .308 and you'll have a rifle that's much more versatile and effective over a wider range of distances and conditions.
(As for bullet availability, there are probably fewer options in .264 than 7mm or .308, but I still have more quality choices than I can ever try in my 260. But sadly the 260 REM just isn't very widespread in factory ammo, and it costs WAY more than the equivalent in 308 WIN.)

I haven't ever loaded a deer that was TO_DEAD to ride in my truck....So I like Foot Pounds of energy, even at long distances, So I shoot the .300 mag on most trips, no other caliber that is feasable for deer delivers the punch down range the .300 (any one you like) does....
I do use the ole 30-06 in the heavy brush though Yep, but I choose a .338 Win Mag.

Well guys just depends on where im hunting that morning or evening. If im hunting the thick brush i pull out the old 30-30. If im hunting more open i use 30-06. Both guns have done the duty. This year i bought me a new rifle its a 7 MM STW. Hope i like it.

I know a man in south Ga. that owns a store and does a LOT of gun work, load development, custom loading and shooting. He shoots more rounds per yr than most of us will in our lives! I posed the same question to him and WITHOUT hesitation he says 260 Rem.hands down.

I have most of the rounds listed above and they are all great deer rounds. But I think the best would be 7mm08; 260 , or 308. They will fit into a short action and can be made into a short light rifle. All are inherently accurate and are flat shooting with marginal recoil.

i like the 243, but you are limited to such light bullets with poor sectional density

I got a 450 marlin guide gun great in the tree stand and blind. But not to good for long shots with a 350 grain bullet it drops pretty fast.

I use a P17 for longish distance. Its a 30-06 i inherited. But, an SKS will work theyre relatively sheap semi-automatic and very common, verry extremely muchisimo cheap ammo.

pretty much any .270 + will work though i'd get the .270 wsm if i ever got a 270. U have to try to go overkill with a rifle on deer.

.308 enough said!!!!
By Chuck Hawks
Illustration courtesy of Hornady Mfg. Co. The .308 Winchester is one of the world's most popular hunting and target shooting cartridges. It is also one of the four cartridges on my "short list" of all-around rifle cartridges. And my article "The .308 Winchester (7.62mm NATO)" on the Rifle Cartridge Page gets more page views than any other article. The .308 is one popular rifle cartridge!
Because of the diversity of loads and bullet styles, it is hard to generalize, but the following are typical American factory loads for the .308 Winchester and are also probably representative of the majority of handoads. The 150 grain spitzer bullet is usually loaded to a muzzle velocity (MV) of 2,820 fps and muzzle energy (ME) of 2,648 ft. lbs. The figures at 200 yards are 2,263 fps and 1,705 ft. lbs.
The 165 grain spitzer bullet is loaded to a MV of 2,700 fps and a ME of 2,679 ft. lbs. At 200 yards the velocity is 2,194 fps and the remaining energy is 1,763 ft. lbs.
The 180 grain spitzer bullet leaves the muzzle at 2,620 fps with 2,743 ft. lbs. of energy. At 200 yards it is traveling at 2,178 fps and has 1,898 ft. lbs. of kinetic energy.
There are also premium factory loads that are loaded a little bit hotter. Many of the ammunition manufacturers now offer these loads. For example, Federal's Premium High Energy load for the 165 grain bullet has a MV of 2,870 fps and a ME of 3,020 ft. lbs. Their 180 grain load drives a Nosler Partition bullet at a MV of 2,740 fps and a ME of 3,000 ft. lbs.
Bullets used in the .308 generally weigh from 100 to 200 grains. The most common factory loaded bullet weights for the .308 are 150 grain, 165 grain, and 180 grain. These are the best bullet weights for almost all medium and big game hunting with the .308, so they are also the bullets most used by reloaders.
A number of powders work well in the .308 Winchester. Among those recommended are Varget, H380, H335, IMR 3031, IMR 4064, IMR 4895, RL-12, RL-15, and W748. I have used IMR 3031 for years with good results.
The Sierra 150 grain boat tail spitzer has a ballistic coefficient (BC) of .416 and a sectional density (SD) of .226. This is the bullet I use most in my .308. According to the fifth edition of the Sierra Bullets Reloading Manual, 42.8 grains of W748 powder gives this bullet a MV of 2600 fps, and a maximum load of 47.9 grains gives a MV of 2900 fps.
The Sierra 165 grain boat tail spitzer has a BC of .453 and a SD of .248. Sierra figures call for 40.8 grains of W748 powder for a MV of 2500 fps, and 43.5 grains of W748 for a MV of 2700 fps.
The Sierra 180 grain boat tail spitzer has a BC of .530 and a SD of .271. The Sierra Bullets Reloading Manual shows that 39.0 grains of W748 powder gives a MV of 2300 fps, and a maximum charge of 43.6 grains of W748 gives a MV of 2600 fps.
All of these Sierra loads used Federal cases and Federal 210M primers. They were tested in the 26" barrel of a Savage 12VSS rifle.

This sounds like a discussion on which deer to kill. Or what color hair the prettiest ladies have. Shoot what you feel comfortable with. Plenty of good choices out there. Hunt and enjoy. Right on ...ya might as well ask what's the best truck to drive! everybody knows its a f-250 right

Can't go wrong with a 30-06! But a 270 WIN shoots faster, flatter, farther, less kick, and just as effective at the terminal end. The 30-06 is probably the most versatile of all rifles for all of North America, but it's probably not the best at anything.
The 30-06 was designed for power by our military, and my 1917 has flip-ups up to 1600 yards (not that u cud spot a deer that far) so farther's questionable. 30-06 is best at being versatile.

For deer only, anything based on the 308 WIN will work GREAT. The 260 REM is the best, with the 7mm-08 a close second.

I think the first question should be what type of action do you want to hunt with under the conditions you will generally be hunting under. A heart shot is a heart shot.

a hole in the heart or lungs is a dead deer, caliber is nothing more than personal choice, just pick something you can shoot pleasently and accurately.if it knocks the crap out of you ,your not going to practice with it the way you should.

Has anyone ever wondered why the U.S. Army has always stuck with the .30 caliber bullets? It may be of interest to some to research this.....As for me if it is good enough for our army to defend this country with its good enough for me to deer hunt with. .30 cal all the way for me 308 30-06 and 300wm.

It may be of interest to some to research this.....As for me if it is good enough for our army to defend this country with its good enough for me to deer hunt with. .30 cal all the way for me 308 30-06 and 300wm.
#1: Military performance and hunting performance are two different things.
#2: "...stuck with the .30 cal"? Seems to me the .223 got a fair amount of military use. I personally wouldn;t use that round on deer, with so many other better ones available.

any gun you can shoot well. i change yearly the two guns i used the most this year was a tikkaT3 in 30-06 and a browning Abolt in 270wsm. i swear by both those guns but imo a regular 270win is probobly perfect for 99% of the hunting any of us will do.
