I'm looking for an outboard mechanic close to my area. I live in Hickman County. I have a 2001 Mercury 25M tiller handle that will not run full throttle. It just started this recently and only does it after the first 10-20 minutes. I have changed my tank and line , plugs with the same results. I'm afraid where ever I take it will sim ply hook it up to a hosepipe start it and tell me it's fine. You can't tell it unless its under a load and it will nearly kill the engine unless you back off the throttle or choke it. It must be something remotely simple, like fuel pump or something in the carb. I just don't want to do more harm than good by tearing into it myself. Any thoughts?
Thanks
Tim

The carbs need cleaning. The local machanic here charges 125 dollars so I do it myself if the engine will run. Here is what you do. First get a bottle of carb cleaner I use chem 12 you can buy it at wallmart. Then I start the engine with the engine running take the fuel line loose from the tank, it helps if you have allready loosened the clamp. Then stick the line inside of the carb cleaner, let it pick up the cleaner till it kills the engine. Reattach the fuel line and pull your spark plugs out of the engine because you have to pump the rest of the cleaner that is left in the line through the carbs and out threw the spark plug holes while you turn the engine over. It helps if you squeeze the bulb while you choke the engine as you turn it over. Once you smell the gas coming threw put your plugs back in and your done, just saved your self 125 dollars.

Oh I forgot to mention, make sure you get the liguid carb cleaner, not the spray. It says to add it to the tank but I find this way alot more affective.

THANKS!
I will definately give that a try. The only 2 things I could figure out would be dirty carb or fuel pump. But it will start and run. Thanks for the info.

it's a pull rope starter, sounds like I need another hand. Just a recap, stick the end of the fuel line inside the carb cleaner jug and let run (in idle or full throttle?) until it dies.Remove plugs and crank (in my case pull) and the engine turning over should flush most of the carb cleaner from the engine. Hook the line back up and re install the plugs and hopefully its fine. Is this correct?

I will add that it's a 2 stroke. Do I run any kind of major risk by doing this?

My motors are two stroke as well. If the engine will idle then let it till it kills the engine. If it wont just give it enough throttle to keep the engine running till it dies.
I have had to do this three or four times over the last thirty years and havent had a problem. The last motor that needed it was a 18 horse evinrude windspeed that would not run at all,it had not been run in thirty years and I just inherited it. So I took it to Staffords marine and he charged 147 dollars to clean the carbs and put a carb kit in it. If it would have run I would have done it myself.

How far from the maury line are you in hickman? I have a shop out hwy 7 closer to columbia. there that I can take a look see at the engine... My dad tends to know about that crap, and prolly wouldn't charge you anything just to clean the carb. maybe a six pack. =) Pm if interested.

if you can run wide open and dies unless you pull the choke check, the fuel pump and the filter in it. Sounds like the motor isn't delievering the fuel to where it needs to go. If you get it wide open and pump the fuel bulb, and it runs fine, the fuel pump is shot.

If you pump the fuel bulb and there is no difference then you prolly have water in the carb. So to take the carb off isn't a real big job, you just take it off and dump the water out of it...

Water comes from the tank, BECUASE condinsation over winter builds up and sits under that gas where your line comes from because water is heavier than gas, and vice versa, There for you could have started the engine and sucked enough water in the carb to make a difference in the way it runs... let me know if that helps,

I'm at the end of hwy7 @ the 100/7/46 intersection, but will be happy to bring it down after I try cleaning the carb myself. The bad thing is I won't know if it's fixed or not until I actually put it in the water as it runs fine when I hook it up to a hosepipe.

I take all of my outboards to Lawrenceburg Marine , and let Steve Mann look at it. He is the master mechanic and they don't charge an arm and a leg to fix it right.
I'll never have a backyard mechanic work on a outboard to save a buck. I had one guy screw a motor up , and I had to take it to Steve to get it fixed right.

Do they have pool there that they run the motor in? Would it be easier to leave the motor on the boat and leave it all with them? or just take the motor?

They could probably answer those questions better than I could . ;\) I had a motor with similar symptoms (it wouldn't run under power, but would hooked up to a hose) and it was the fuel pump.
They fixed it for me.

Imograss, It may not be relevant for your motor but last year my 2004 Johnson started doing the same thing. It turned out that there is a thermostat that that monitors water temp and will cut power down so as not overheat the engine but will let the motor run at reduced power so you don't get stranded. Mine was stopped up with mud. The mechanic cleaned them and I have had no trouble since.

tim, It was great to meet you. Glad we could solve the problem for you... I will buy dad something nice with the money you gave me. =) There wasn't a charge though. I was glad we could pass the knowledge onto you, and maybe if you encour the problem in the future you will know what to do, Don't forget though, when you check the carb, to clear the fuel line and the tank... Thanks for the brush burner liquid too. =) anyways, I hope we can get together and go fishing sometime!!!
