I have a shooting dysfunction that only gets me while I'm pattering my gun, not shooting turkeys. My gun pops me in the cheekbone and it smarts, sometimes making me flinch on future patterning shots. Now I don't flinch come turkey time, but what am I doing wrong? I shoot a M'berg 835 ulti w/ 3.5 shells.

Get a Remington. I've never shot the Mossberg, but everybody I've talked to said it kicks like a mule.

I shoot a Rem 870 with 3.5" shells and after a box or two I get the flinches too. Come turkey time, no problem at all. You might try a Caldwell's Lead Sled, I bought one back before deer season to sight in my guns, even a 12ga slug feels like a small caliber rifle.... great investment.

I shoot the same gun and it does kick like a mule. My first shot got me in the cheek also and it was sore for a week. I just had to tweak my shooting position a bit which makes it kinda uncomforatable from normal shooting but you get used to it after a little practice. I usually rest my cheek on every gun i shoot, but with this one i have to keep it raised off the stock just a bit.

Try a red dot, my face never touches the gun when pulling the trigger. When dialing mine in I put it in a good vice and line it up, no use in punishing yourself. I've never felt it go off when turkey hunting.
The 835 packs a punch and really no way to make it stop, but you can limit the amount of punishment you take.

If you are just trying to make sure your gun in throwing a good pattern try and shoot light loads. This works well for me! I range 20, 30, and 35 yards with my rangefinder and shoot light loads. If the pattern looks good and at point of aim then I will shoot a turkey load at 40. With the price of turkey shells you can eat up alot of money and wear out your cheek and shoulder. JMO

recoil anticipation
take a empty shell and practice dry firing with that
to "untrain your mind to no recoil " so to speak
also on the mossy trigger take up some of the creep on the trigger because it is their (trigger creep)
i.e. "staging the trigger" , till you feel it stop (kinda like a back wall effect on a compound bow) then apply your trigger squeeze with just the last half of your index fingers 1st digit
sorry cant help the army shooting stuff for coming out of me
either way it recoil antcipation, just get the gun patterned
use the empty shell for dry firing 4-5 times between actual live shots
you will surprised, it does work
also make sure no part of your thumb is touching your nose
on the comb of the stock/ rear area of the pistol grip
if your nose is touching any part of your thumb you are craning your head to far forward which can lead to get smacked by the butt stock or your own thumb in various ways from recoil.
you need to roll with the recoil as one with the gun also
make sure the hard horizontal part of your cheek bone has the same comb contact point everytime, everyshot
this should become muscle memory
and dry firing helps aquire muscle memory
if you are worried about your firing pin being damaged
you can get a snap cap shell and accomplish the same thing
dry fire drills are a big part of marksmanship training and shooting mechanics and proper form
just advice not saying you are doing something wrong
just some simple advice.
get your self a sims pad that will reduce felt recoil and also add about 1/2 inch of lenght to the stock also moving your head back that 1/2 inch also
all of us that have mossy 835,s have been bit by them
the back of my right thumb got introduced to my nose the 3rd round i put thru mine almost 3 years ago and it has not since , i learnt my lesson real quick and got good form for shooting it.

Thanks. Sounds like I need a cheek pad! LOL! Isn't that funny how none of us feel the recoil when we kill a bird?

i took a double last year on fort campbell
about a second and a half between the shots
never felt a thing except excitment and he!! ya!!!!!!!!!
something i would never do at a range shooting that quick between shots.
