Love to striper fish, no boat anymore.

What is the striper fisjhing like below the dam and can you fish it from the bank? What works best, live shad or stuff like cotton cordell redfins. Can shad be caught from the bank? Never been up there. Only over the bridge that runs across the river right below it.

i have had the best luck "swimming" live skipjacks(if you can catch one)with no water running.no weight, just let him swim around. some fish are caught off the sidewalk on leadheads and grubs at the generators with the water running but it can be combat fishing at times. i prefer to get close to the dam for bait then move downstream half a mile or so to fish. one word of advice, two actually, when the shad comes to the surface, get ready because something is looking at it. also when it comes to the surface, BEWARE OF BIRDS!!! they WILL grab your bait!

we catch skipjack below Melton Hill with flyrods while we are fishing for stripers. We call them "Tennessee Tarpon".

I think the skipjack population has been hurt by the previous years drought. We used to catch a lot while striper fishing but that has dropped off, and the striper catch for us (throwing a fly) has picked up. In fact we had our best year last summer. We boated 26 stripers in one afternoon, all on flies, largest one 22 pounds. So I believe the stripers had to turn to the threadfin for a food source which helped us in the long run since the skipjack population is down.
