My buddy Jack (terrier on tndeer) and I headed out for the first trout trip of the season. As always, we had a few kinks to work out.

I won't get into the gory details, but here are the basics. Jack tied up a bunch of new flies for the trip and left them on the desk at home. It's better than the time he left his fly reels at home. One of Jack's fly lines broke, and I broke a rod. On the way home, a brand new $170 rain jacket (on a bluebird day) and every streamer I owned flew out of the back of the boat. That would have been a pretty huge loss, but since I'm the one that tied most of them, they never caught fish anyway. We made up for hundreds of dollars and tying hours down the toilet by picking up an anchor off the bottom of the river. Yup, somehow it made me feel better.

The river was pretty crunched up with boaters and waders, and I was told that (as always), fishing had been phenomenal yesterday. If you go tomorrow, it's guaranteed fishing will be excellent. The bite was pretty slow, but we picked up a fish here and there. Aside from the cluster factor, we had a ball.

Ingenious redneck sighting of the day - Two young guys in a boat didn't even bother going on shore for their shore lunch. They were cooking the fish they caught on a grill they had in the middle of their boat. When I caught a nice 16-inch brown, they offered to cook it up for me.

Gil, I was going to give you a call a couple weeks ago but somehow never got around to it. Originally Mauries said he was going to go but he backed out, and I never managed to fill the empty boat seat. Next time I'll make a better effort.

Are you going to be at the H'ville Fly Club meeting tomorrow?

Wish I could go, but I have a meeting I can't miss. Hold down the fort, and we'll toss a fly when the action heats up a little. Okay?

Gil, in that first pic of you with a brown, your fly is open. Never saw pants with a horizontal fly before, but you always were sort of leading edge.

Was the fishing better near the dam or farther down? Most of the pics with fish seem farther down, but I don't know th ebanks that well to tell for sure.

I plan to head over there Thursday or Friday if work stays slow and the weather cooperates.

We went up to the dam while they were generating because there has intermittently been a shad kill over the last month. Unfortunately, it was warm, and the shad pattern didn't work. So then you're stuck trying to fly fish in high water, and that's usually a low percentage game. We didn't get many bites until after the generators had been shut off for about an hour.

The further the water went down and the longer the fish had to acclimate to the change, the better the fishing was. In other words, I don't think it had anything to do with the section of river, more the river flow. We only got one bite all day on streamers, and that was a big brown as it got cloudy and later in the day. Of course, I lost the mutha scratcha. Then I broke my streamer rod when my back cast got caught up in Jack's, so strippin' was out.

If I were to do it all over again (assuming no shad kill), I would start way down river and fish low water before the water came up. Man, good luck, and give us a report.
