Today was my first foray to see if any pre-spawn crappie are starting to move into the creeks on Chickamauga Lake.

They are!

Me and Ed McCoy smoked 'em good.

We were honestly surprised. We started fishing about 7:45 and put our 30th keeper in the boat at 1:30. We caught roughly a 1:1 ratio of keepers to throwbacks... and had four fish that were 14-inches-plus (two were 14 & 7/8ths, but wouldn't quite stretch to TARP length)

The overwhelming majority (app. 25) were white crappie... a really big surprise to me. It was the most white crappie I've put in the boat on Chickamauga Lake in several years.

The majority came from 9 to 13 feet of water on a flat adjacent to the creek channel. Trolling 16th oz. tube jigs... chartreuse, yellow/chartreuse & red/chartreuse were the best colors (note "chartreus" was the common element).

It was never fast and furious, but using the slow & steady "tortoise" approach... we just kept hammering away on them. It was great fun and a pleasant surprise since we both went figuring it was going to be more of a "scouting trip" than a "catching trip."

Which means of course that life is good and gettin' better every day!

We gave em a try Friday and didnt get the first touch. The water temp was thirty eight degrees and we figured they were out in the river chanel in a thermalcline. It is good to see someone catching them. Send some on down to Kentucky lake.

I've used the same technique in Agency Creek with great success. Agency didn't fish very good for me last year however.

Couple of my buddies got blanked there saturday.

They had been catching a few at the mouth fishing
deep.

We caught a good number in there last year, but
only 1 in 3 were keepers.

I have heard some great reports outta Sardis, MS. Limits the last few trips.
And I think they have gone to a 20 fish, 12-inch length-limit creel.
So those are some pretty impressive fish.

If I'm fishing... I'm happy. But catching fish helps.

Sweet!

They have officially started moving the OTHER way on KY lake again. They were all up in the 2-3' stake beds last week and as of yesterday were back in the mouth of creeks and in deep trees hanging into the creek channel. With the colder weather on the way, I suspect the river ledges to get right again before long.

Thats fine with me though. I want that water temp to stay down as long as possible for selfish reasons. Me and my flippin stick want the bass to bed in the bushes when the water comes up. \:\)

Yep... I haven't crappie fished any more since this report. However I hear from others that crappie have been finicky and on the move due to fluctuating water temps here as well.
