I am somewhat of a traditional hunter when I hunt spring gobblers. I make and collect calls. I do not have a large collection but it keeps growing every year. Below are my top choices for this year: Albert Paul makes a fantastic call. I have killed several gobblers with that call. The very first time I used that call, I saw a gobbler fly out of the roost 200 yards away and I called him right in. Tim Clayton makes a some very nice calls that are reasonable price. It is a very high quality call for the money. He is an up and coming call maker. Jerry White, a.k.a. Dad’s Calls make a fine box call. Below are a few pictures.
Tim Claytons one sided called made with persimmon and Florida cherry.

Florida Cracker Call made by Tim Clayton made with Florida cypress, Florida maple, and Florida cedar.

Below is a great box call made by Albert Paul. The box is persimmon and the paddle is curly maple.

Below is one of Jerry White’s custom calls made from cedar with a purple heart paddle.

Nice looking calls. I've got one that was a Christmas present made by Tommy Hepler in Rogersville. It's made from Chestnut that came off a barn. It's got a good sound to it.

I am not a box call person, but there is a fellow named Darrin Dawkins in Rock Hill, SC that makes the best sounding boxes I have ever heard.

Darrin does make a nice box call. Albert Paul is out of Mississippi and his calls are all turkey. They are a bit pricey but well worth the money. It is a call that you will carry in your vest for the rest of your life.

I have one that's black but can't tell you off the top of my head who made it because I very rarely use it. I use my mouth calls and slate calls 99% of the time. Good looking calls you've got though.

I have a stradivarius! Well not really, it just sounds like one. Ashby(Ike) out of Houston, MO. Now out of business. Mine is a "raspy old hen" which I bought for $2.50 off of a discount table years ago. The last one that I saw on ebay went for around $250 as I recall. Beautiful sound.

not fancy, but this call was give to me by my step brothers dad. i was doing some work for him about 10 years ago and we got to talking turkey hunting and calls. i told him my favorite was a lohman 870 that i lost in the woods some years before. he said, look what i got. and showed me this box call. the tone was unreal, and i told him that it looked like an 870 with an extra handle, and all cedar. he said yep, mr johnson handmade a few of them a few years ago. i said your lucky to have that call. he said its not my call its yours!! i have used it many times and called in a few call shy turkeys with it, along with the wingbone i made, they are deadly calls to have in my vest!!

I will say this that there is no sound quite as piercing in the spring woods as someone who has no idea how to run a box hacking away. Finger nails on a chalk board...

That's true but the worst sound I've ever heard in the woods was a real hen carrying on. I just knew somebody was walking in on me and then there she was. I couldn't believe it.

I can't tell you how many times I've thought"that can't be a hen, sounds awful!" only it..ummm.. is a hen.I guess it goes to show that even the real thing doesn't make perfect sounds every time. That's why when I mess up it don't bother me!

Great looking calls Stoner.
I'm not a box call user either, but the main reason is I can't see spending the $$$ for a quality call and then end up sitting on it and busting it, knowing my luck !
It is my understanding though that on windy days, they can't be beat for the volume they can produce.
How much do you use the scratch box in the third pic? I work with the son of a passed-on turkey legend in these parts, and the son gave me some of his dad's old turkey calls. There was a well-used scratch box in the assortment, and while I have practiced with it, I just can't get it quite right. I'd love to kill a bird using that call. Kind of like a tribute. Any tips?
Also in the loot was what looks like a box call without the lid, but it has a fairly thick nail driven in to the bottom with the nail head protruding just above the plane of the top of the box. There is another rectangular block of wood that was used to drag across the nail head. I can get a turkey sound from it about 25% of the time. Ever seen one of those?

I have one made by some Bailey feller in Greene County. This thing is the cat's meow......Or maybe the Turkey's cluck.
I am not sure but I think his first name is Allen.

I don't use a box call a lot, but I'll keep a long box in my vest made by call maker Carl Beatty of NCGC and I'm going to keep in my vest the Wet Box from Primos just for a rainy day.

Paul's Calls by Albert Paul best call hands down. He hand makes the calls from orders only. You can see his booth at the NWTF show in Nashville but he will not have any calls to buy you have to place a order for one. You can spec the call exactly the way you want it.

Honestly? Which ever one they may like that particular morning. I'm always amazed at how turkey will react to different calls on different days.
