another caney question

I'm thinking about heading down to the caney tommorow, I have been wanting to go really bad here lately. My question is I wet wade but its going to be way too cold for that. My usual honey holes are not reachable from the bank. I was wondering if someone could let me know where a good place to fish from the bank may be.

Yes, no wet wading right now. The easiest spots to get to are below the dam and at Happy Hollow. I generally don't fish these areas because of the crowds, but there should be none this time of year.

As to where to go to get more wadeable water, I would follow the low water by checking the release schedules.

Here's a general guide...

It takes the water:
35 minutes to get to Lancaster
2 1/2 hours to Happy Hollow
3 hours to Betty's/15 more to Kirby
6 hours to Stonewall

dropping out after 1 unit:
2 hours/Lancaster
5 hours Happy
6 1/2 Betty's/Kirby
Stonewall?

For the release schedule, call 1 (800) 238-2264, Press 4, then 37. At around 4 or 5 pm, they will post the schedule for the folllowing day.

I hear they are tearing them up on minnows right now..on the steps..or spoons if you don't care for live bait.

Gil, it's been a while since I timed it but I believe it's closer to an hour for the water to hit Happy and just under 4 for it to hit Kirby, give or take a bit depending on flow.

The one time I was on that other site you're on (trophytn or whatever), that's the information I got. I copied and pasted from there. I have no idea, but I do know I always time it wrong.

I think Gil's time are right for max flow...meaning the peak of the pulse or optimum flow will reach there in about that time, but there is inherent backup just by the nature of running water through all those bends and turns. No, it doesn't take that long for the water to necessarily reach Happy...think about floating. Does it take 2 1/2 hours to reach Happy in a boat? Last time I checked...which admittedly has been a while..it was not.

I'm assuming you mean the steps right by the dam. Do you know how they work the minnows or spoons? My Dad use to catch them there when I was a little kid, but I've never tried it and dont have any idea how to do it. Maybe yall can fill me in.

Brian/Gil- It depends on how many gens are on. It can vary from 1 hour to 2.5, Dam to Happy. I have never been able to establish an accurate time chart of water flow for any point on the river. However, you must keep in mind...I don't own a watch.
