I have owned MANY expensive and not so expensive bows. This past summer, 2008, I bought TWO NEW Parker Wildfire bows from Turks sport shop. 319.00 each. Accessories as much or as little as you want to spend. Heck, I bet MANY bow shops will probably set you up if you buy the bow from them, for little or nothing if you buy used accessories. And used bows can still be got for a BARGAIN!
BTW...for the money, the Wildfire is one of the most forgiving and best hunting bow I've owned. And it is one of the cheapest!

I have more invested in my bow and 12 arrows than my deer rifle and ML Conmbined.
However, you can get into archery for a lot less money.

As an example I paid more than $ 100 for the T5 quiver alone.

Bow hunting is like everything else. You can buy low end or high end stuff.

You can have fun and kill game with an innexpensive bow.

Where folks get hosed is by buying without enough diligence and realizing quickly they didn't buy well.

JayMac has scored..

You don't have to have a Cadillac to drive on the road. People need to realize there are some good setups to be had at a very decent price. You just have to do your home work. Knowing the market value of a bow and the accessories (new and used) is very very helpful and can save you some bucks. Never look past a good used bow. There are folks out there that sell and buy several times a year. When they get the hots for something new they'll usually take a huge loss.
