I have a confession to make. I can not back up a boat trailer using mirrors. I suck at it!

As with many boaters I learned how to back up a boat trailer in a truck looking over my shoulder out the back window. Well I have found that 25 years of backing up this way has become second nature and is a habit that is almost impossible to break. I have a terrible time seeing my boat trailer behind my Hummer. The way the windows are cut and the high back and tire mount make it difficult to see out the back window. I have tried using side mirrors and it totally screws me up and I am not comfortable backing the trailer up with mirrors.

I saw a new device in the Bass Pro catalog that I think might help me out. It is called the Launch and Load and appears to be just what I need to help align the trailer as I back up.

Launch and Load System

Does anyone have one of these or know someone who does? If so does it help any?

I've seen people use the fiberglass flag things on each side of their trailer to see where the trailer is. Whatever works.

Looks like it would work great when the boat is off the trailer , but when the boat is on the trailer it will not be visible . So you will still have problems seeing the boat and trailer while launching .

I can see the motor when I am backing it with a loaded trailer. It is so tall and sets up high enough I can see it. The empty trailer is the issue.

I'm glad that I am apparently "ambiboattrous" ... I can use mirrors or go "over the shoulder."

Does that mean I'm "boatlexic?" \:\)

That reminds me off an old CB joke from the 70's. When a trucker wanted to know if any Smokies were in front of him he would CB the trucks in the on coming lane and ask "How's it look over your shoulder". The normal response was it clear to mile marker 10 or clear to Birmingham, etc.

The best answer was "Over my shoulder, heck I ain't never had it over my belt buckle."

I learned to use my mirrors. Just place one hand on the bottom center of the steering wheel. Then if you want the trailer to go left, move your hand to the left and same with right. I just get lined up and keep the drivers side fender in my mirror. I have just opened the back hatch on my Explorer on some tight gravel ramps.
