Don't ask me why such things interest me... but, I wondered how many gallons of rain fell, which will ultimately be flowing down the Tennessee River and it's tributaries?

TVA says that there are 40,872 square miles of drainage area in the Tennessee River System.

U.S. Army Corp of Engineer scientists who monitor Lake Lanier report that 1 inch of rain over one square miles = 17,377,536 gallons of water

Multiplied by 40,872 square miles = 710,324,161,536 gallons of water (more 710 Billion gallons).

Assuming an average of 2 inches of rain fell across the TN Valley Drainage Area = 1,420,648,323,072 gallons of water (more than 1.4 Trillion gallons).

Now you know.

As I posted elsewhere, fortunately, in the News business (which I'm in) ... such things really can qualify as "work." Especially when there's been a flood.

As I always say, "A journalist's job is to learn stuff.... and then tell other folks what you learned."

Unfortunately, I'm plagued with what I call "nerd's disease", which basically means I want to know about...everything.

It drives me crazy to not understand something on at least a superficial level. If I could, I would spend at least three hours a day doing research on the most random things you could ever think of. Often it's physical chemistry or history, but anything is fair game.

Needless to say, that means that I was completely interested in what you had to say \:D

If they are so heavy, then why do they float and not sink to the ground?

Simms is just trying to get me to make another trip to the liquor store. Nobody can cipher that well.

Yes, water weighs 8# a gallon, if that is true, and it is, then how far can a yellow balloon, filled half-full be thrown before striking a fat woman? I conducted this experiment from a second story hotel window in Bozeman, MT in 1969. The target was cowboy from Texas who was a good 15 yards past the fat woman.

Fine was $100.
