A buddy of mine wants to check into maybe finding a guide up on Dale Hollow that can teach him how to float n fly for smallmouth. Me, I don't know beans about smallmouth fishing, being raised in a warm water area in Missouri in a family of non-fishermen, but I'm willing to learn!

Just wondered if anyone had a recommendation on who to hook up with, or might even be saavy in the ways of FnF who wouldn't mind going with sometime.

I wish I knew how to do that. Sounds like fun.

It can be alot of fun. Id rather throw a big deep diving jerkbait and work it real slow that time of year but float n fly works. I dont know who tell you as far as guides, no one local uses them so I dont know.

steven headrick aka smallmouth guru look up punisher lures and you should find all about him ......but i practilly live on dalehollow and cordell hull and if i wanted to catch some brown ones i guess i would fish the main lake points and channel banks this time of year with a hair jig 1/4 ounce brown hair and maybe a green punkin trailer around twenty feet plus do that on the sunny days, and on the cloudy windy days get your float n fly or whirly bee out and fish it aroud ten to fifteen foot deep on the same banks i like a shaded bank imo the fish are just more active on them............and a shakey head works well to ..........but if i was gonna hire a guide i would give steven a call i think billy westmoreland was his mentor if that tells ya anything

Cool, thanks for the input, guys.

I believe my buddy knows a fair amount about smallie fishing, but he specifically wants to learn the technique, and was gracious enough to ask if I'd be interested in going along. You can ask MathewsHunter, but I get excited catching anything from skipjack on up! And I think smallmouth are absolute God-given works of art! Wow.

Having good, quality electronics and knowing how to use them is the ticket to success with this tactic. And learning how to cast a fly on a long line of depth from the bobber is another. If fish are suspended in 8-10 feet in the water column, most people can get that cast down pretty quick. When they are at 18-25 feet, then that is a whole different ballgame. ;\)

Most of the time you can just concentrate on main channel points, find the bait on the LCR, set the bobber at that depth, have a lot of patience, use light (4-6 pound test) and you will get bit. It is about the best way to catch big brownies in gin-clear water when the water temp's get in the 40's that there is.

Good info !
