OK, this winter I'm going to try a little Striper action instead of just going after the bait (Skipjack t the Steam Plant).
What size and style hook do you use, and where do you hook the bait?
I'll be using a 7 foot flipping stick set in a rod holder with the spool set on clicker.

Gamakatzu or Owner hook - through the nose if you're trolling bait behind a planer, or through the back behind the dorsal if you're still fishing or drifting slower than the current.

I use 4/0-6/0 kahle hook and hook them through the nose while drifting them below the dams in current. I use a 3-way swivel with up to 4oz of lead. I if were using them in slack water, I would hook them in the back.

Jakeaway - Don't switch over to the baitcaster just yet! You will have a ball catching them on your fly rod. Just don't strip back as fast as you do with the skippies, let it really sink, and use some big, long streamers. Jon Jordan caught a 13 pounder the other day, and folks are catching lots of decent hybrids on the fly. I want to see another video this year too! Good luck!

Jeanne and I are planning on going Dec 26 if it doesn't rain. She uses a slow retrieve; last year she caught three saugers on the fly. Hopefully we'll hook into a few.
MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!

Jake , that fly rig is for girls . Use a man rig for stripers . Good luck !
You're actually right. To be honest, sometimes I catch a skipjack and drop it over the side on a baitcaster and put it in a rod holder. Then, I fling a fly rod the rest of the day - the best of both worlds. Except I've never caught anything with the skipjack.

I like a 8/0 octopus(non-circle) the best for baits 12-18 inches.

The only way I enjoy fishing for Stripers is with a Zoom Fluke on the top or just below the surface with a baitcaster . I have never really gotten into the baitfishing rigs , although I have caught them with bait while fishing with other fishermen .
