As you can see by the number of post I mostly read and take in all the valuable info from this site.

I just got a boat and am ready to fish only problem is I never fished in winter or from a boat. What are the best fish to go after and what technique do I use this time of year? also I live in Murfreesboro any lake within an hour and a half is my target.

Any of the above lakes along with Normandy, Tims Ford, and Woods Reservoir to the south. Crappie, smallmouth, and Stripers are all good cool weather fish. For the crappie and Smallies I'd say just fish around 15' to 30' on rocky bluffs with fallen trees or other cover on them. Be sure and use a very slow presentation with everything you throw at em. Minnows and 1" grubs or bass assasins for the crappie and deep cranks or flukes with weighted hooks for the smallies and stripers should do the trick. There's a lot more you can do, but this is what I would start with. Good luck and DON'T forget the plug. LOL

I haven't been lately and I don't know of anyone personally, but here's a link to a local fishing forum if you're interested and the mods here don't mind.

I grew up crappie fishing it with my granddad. Actually the only times I ever fished were with him. No telling how many I've caught and eaten from that lake. He died in 2005 but quit fishing probably around 2003 and I haven't fished but from the bank a time or two with my kids. Ironically I live within 5 miles of 6 boat ramps on Priest. Follow the channel as there are spots where it shallow. Maybe someone else will chime in and give you some more up to date info on it. Good luck.

Dude, unless your boat is for sure in good shape, I would not go out until spring. If you leak, motor wont start or any problems where you get stuckn then your up the creek! I bought a boat one time and took it out in March. I had a trolling motor on it so I knew that I could get around if the motor would't start. Well, I launch my boat and the motor wouldn't start. The wind is overpowering my trolling motor away from the ramp! I look in the engine compartmeny and my live well hoses are leaking water badly...I' screwed! I litterally debate whether or not to try to pull the boat behind me or not when I have to jump in. Finally I get smart and troll with the wind to a bank I end up about 1/2 mile from the ramp. Luckly another boat comes by and tows me in. This could have ended not so good for me. Later I got the boat running and used it for two years befor ethe motor blew. Sold it for $250 and that guy never touched it and later sold it for $200. Too bad for him...

Id say make sure the motor starts, clean it up, drain the fuel, put a cover on it, and wait til march. Or thats my plans anyways. Tournaments dont start til then haha

Wintertime fishing is my favorite time to fish. No crowd, no jetskis, no ski boats, and the fishing is great. Just use your head and be prepared.

Thanks for the advice guys, I had it started with the garden hose attachment and it runs great \:\) I will take extra caution before I head anywhere to make sure i have no leaks. I really want to try winter fishing because of the reasons TNlynn mentioned. Plan on heading out on PP on saturday mostly to learn the boat but i will be getting hooks wet to!

Try Old Hickory this time of year - Specifically above the 231 bridge. Fish the mouths of major creeks and look for deep holes - 45 ft or greater. Fish the slope into the hole the try the slope out of the hole. Fish 1 to 1 1/14 jigs tipped with tuffys or shiners. Red / white or Blue/ white combos on Cloudy days and Chartreuse and anything if sunny. Should net you plenty of Sauger and/or Walleye. Just down and around the curve from Taylor's landing usually has some nice fish.

Go to Dale Hollow and throw a FloatNFly or a jig. You may only catch a couple, but they will probably be some of the biggest smallies of your life.
