What length barrel does everyone use? I have an 870 with a 26"barrel, but it is a tad long with some pop-up blinds that I am using. Works fine in some homebrew permanent blinds that I have built, but I like the flexibility of popups. Obviously, the solution is to get a bigger and more expensive popup, or a shorter barrel.

Been pondering the long barrel deal, and I have come up with at least a semi-solution, without the expense of a new shotgun or barrel. Install a flush mounted choke, which will chop an inch off replacing the extended choke now in place(hopefully the new one will pattern "good enough"). And, replace the recoil pad with a plastic butt plate( which will shorten the gun by almost another inch). Aint scewin' around with this stuff fun!

I'm pretty partial to my 26" with ext. choke in my 870. I went out and bought a blind thinking I needed it, wound up using it to hunt in on a rainy day and got a jake for practice (first solo bird). Then the other 3 were locate, run & gun (figuratively speaking). No time to set up a blind...... I use it now some to deer hunt out of.... The key is to just be versatile, the less you have to carry around the easier it will be to carry a big gobbler for a long distance.

My son is the long distance carrier of birds.Well, that is, assuming that he can shoot! lol The "flexibility" that I speak of, is setting up a portable where the birds were sounding off yesterday, assuming that I don't have a permanent there already. The run and gun days for me are but a distant memory. Besides, I seem to kill more turkeys the less mobile that I become! One of the benefits of old age is to make you stay still. At any rate, I have ordered a Carlson Flush mount turkey choke and a vintage remington butt plate, so we'll see. If this thing don't pattern to suit me, I suppose that I'll put the extended choke back on and sit all the way back in one corner of the blind!
