My son is now 10 and ready for his first deer rifle. Most of my buddies start thier boys off with the ole .243 but I've never been one to follow the crowd. My son is proficient with my ole lever action 30-30 but wants a gun of his own. I was thinking about a youth model .25 WSSM Browning A-bolt. Not the cheapest route but maybe a gun he can say was his first and give to his son someday. From what I have gathered, the 25 WSSM will be throwing just a little more lead, with alot more velocity. And as we all know, velocity is good. I have also read that the WSSM rounds actually produce less recoil than magnum or short magnum rounds so I don't think recoil will be an issue at all. Just wondering what you guys think. Thanks.

That is an awesome cartridge that never really caught on. It will be hard to find factory ammo for it.

Winchester makes a ballistic tip factory load for it and it looks like a mean little round, I just havent talked to anyone with any "hands on" time with it. Hate to spend a grand to see if I like it.

I had one in a Model 70, really liked the round just dont like Winchesters. In a Browning it would certainly be nice, I would definitely not recommend getting one though unless you handload. Also they do recoil quite a bit more than say a 243 for instance. Mine liked 110gr Accubonds the best.

i would go with 7mm-o8 or 308. Not very much recoil at all and plenty enough knock down power for white-tail.

I started with a 243 switch to a 270. got tired of it breaking my shoulder. Went back to the 243 single shot. Never had a deer leave my sight with the 243. All in what you like I guess. I just love my 243, very low recoil, accurate enough to strike matches and has put every deer down i've pulled the trigger on.

I have the A Bolt in 25 WSSM .I purchased this rifle after shooting a freinds at the range. The recoil will not be a factor.

The 25 WSSM is accurate and flat shooting .

The 115 balistic tips do a lot of damage to the inside of your deer and sometimes will not leave an exit hole. The 110 AccuBond might be a better choice. Sportsmans Warehouse always has ammo on the shelf.
