Get yourself a "cat-tail". Pluck out seeds and let them fly. One cat tail will last for years. I keep mine in a plastic bag in my truck. A pinch will last a long time before having to refill.

I, like some others, use a small feather and sewing thread. I prefer an owl feather if you happen to find one or a turkey breast feather about 1 1/2". I guess a goose breast feather would work too. These seem to be more fluffy and the slightest breeze will move them.

I laughed at Dennis one year with his string on the muzzle end of his gun. now it seems like an excellent idea.

A little trick that works well. Some of the eye drop & nasal spray bottles have removable ends on them. Once it is empty, wash and dry. Then fill 1/2 way with baking powder, you now have a puffer.
No scent and a puff of the powder indicates the wind direction.

I use the baking soda puffer, cattails and the feather hanging from my barrel. All of these are great for what the wind is doing within a few feet of your location, but it doesn't tell you where your scent is going long-range. If I'm setting up a stand I want to have an idea of what the wind is doing relative to the temperature, time of day, prevailing wind direction, so I use smoke bombs and watch which way the wind is swirling and where my scent would potentially go. I don't do this when I'm hunting, of course. After you do this under several different wind conditions and record the data, it will give you a good indication of what's happening with your scent.

I like to know what the wind is doing where my bullet is going. I usally tie a piece of marking tape at 50 and 100 yards out. Wind often swirls and gusts. Down range it is usally doing something different than at the stand.

This whole thread got me to hang a light weight ribbon on a ten inch stiff wire stuck in the top of a wood post just a few yards from our camper door. no longer do we have to stand out in the cold to see which way the wind is blowing...but just check out the ribbon.
thanks guys!! such a simple thing, wish I had done it years ago
