Here is something I started using many yrs ago that helps knock the edge off those real cold morning/days

I remembered back when I was really young my father use to have one of those handwarmers that you put lighter fluid in and the lite the catalyst and it would burn all day. He used it when snowmobiling in the winter months here in NY. He would place it in his chest pocket of his shirt under his outer clothing.

Well after some searching and a great find at a local garage sale I now have about a half dozen of these little beauties.

I fill them (@ 1 oz of fluid)in the morning before I leave home or camp and place one in my shirt pocket and one in my tubular hand warmer I wear around my waist. They last all day and I have found I stay warmer with this little heat supplier helping to warm my core area.

I did have one concern at first, they do omit a slight odor.......so I thought, why not place a few drops of cover scent or natural scent on the bags they are kept in. It worked the nuts. I now am warm and have a constant warm scent disperser all in one.

You can locate these hand warmer on the internet, Peacock is one brand as well as Sportsman's Guide.com

I have two Jon-e regular hand warmers like you describe. you can get them at just about any outdoors store. They are great on VERY cold days. Any other days the just get too hot.

I remember those from when I was a young boy. Do they still burn a little stick of charcoal, or just lighter fluid?

Did not know they still made those.

you can get both, catylist sticks or lighter fluid. I prefer the latter as the stick get difficult to find during the season.

Keep in mind I am used to NY mountain temps in Nov and into the first few weeks of Dec. Sometimes the day time temps are only mid 30's if that.

It help with the kids as well, we all know how that goes...........LOL.

Sorry FD, VERY cold is relative. For me lows in the 20's and highs in the 40's is VERY cold. I didn't remember you are in NY. If it was colder than VERY cold for me, I would MOVE!

It was 25 degrees in Hardeman County where I hunted yesterday morning.
I had on two pairs of wool pants, a heavy wool shirt, a heavy wool jacket, wool gloves, and my LaCrosse insulated rubber boots.
I still froze. I think my teeth chattering gave the deer a 'heads up' on where I was. I couldn't feel my fingertips as I was putting my climbing stand together.
I love early season because it's bow-only, and it's warm. I actually hunt less when it's cold because I have very little body fat to keep me warm, and I HATE cold weather!!!
I will look into those warmers today.
Thanks for the tip.
