Just curious on how wide you guys think this buck in the middle is? My gut is telling me to give him one more year but he is gonna be hard to pass!

They look wider this time of yr due to their skinny neck. I find that i judge with, from behind, partially with how far it extends on each side of the neck since i am most often judging bucks during late october-december. Add the velvet fuzz and you lose an inch or 2

Need some closer pics with a straight on view.

As others point out, velvet also makes them look and be temporarily wider.
In fact, velvet makes them look more massive & wider.

If that buck were in my area, I'd want to have a good age guess
before making any killing decisions.

Really close to 20"! It would be really hard to pass on him unless you have like 1000 acres.

I passed an 18" wide 8 pointer one morning during late October with my bow. He had a really thin rack and was a 2.5 yr old. He had awesome genetics. I told all the neighbors about him and we all agreed to give him another year. Well the kid across the road shot him during rifle season in his back yard after school one afternoon.

If you don't personally pass up a young buck, you can never expect anyone else to do it.

And it you shoot all the best young bucks yourself,
you can expect everyone else to do likewise.

My rule of thumb is about half what I pass will survive.
I can live with that.
