Correct. The picatinny base is purely for mounting on a picatinny rail. Common with ARs, and an option on shotguns, but definitely not the best option. I have 3 guns with FFIIIs. The Burris mount designed for the Marlin 336 works wonderfully well. I have two of them and no real complaints. It used to be the best option by far. But if I were buying one today, I would definitely order a Sumtoy mount. Aside from being a few dollars cheaper, and being custom made by an American small business, they are a slightly better mount. Both hold the sight as low as possible, but the Sumtoy is machined for a specific model of gun. They are slightly concave on the bottom edge to match the curve of the receiver. More sturdy and less prone to catch on things while moving through cover. The top picture is from his website. It shows the curvature that I'm talking about. It's shown with a different sight, but the Burris/Vortex mounts are designed the same way. The second is the 336 mount for comparison.
