Pretty much anything you want to talk about!

Maury County is trying to take 400+ acres of public land

Figured I’d share this for anyone it might affect. I know some of y’all may travel from places like east TN to hunt here as well.

In short: they’re trying to get over 400 acres of TVA owned WMA land to build the new fairgrounds and ag expo center. Their argument, it’s only 3% of the WMA.

Article: https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.columb ... ate=ampart

Proposed area (this is mostly leased row crops that generate revenue for TWRA):

They cannot develop on the state natural area due to some federally listed species of wildflower.

Some of you may know that another 400-something acres were recently turned into a county park. This was part of the original agreement with TVA when they turned over management to TWRA. However, this proposed fairgrounds is not part of any such agreement, and they basically see the TVA land as free real estate.

I talked to the area manager on the phone today, and it’s pretty much out of his hands. He is not in favor of it. Obviously TWRA has some say in the whole deal, but it’s ultimately between the state/county and TVA.

If you hunt Yanahli WMA or any public land for that matter, I’d suggest contacting the Maury county representatives and consider attending any of the scheduled town hall meetings to voice your concern.

Scott Cepicky (district 64):

Maury County Mayor:
Andy Ogles - 41 Public Square
Columbia, TN 38401

aogles@maurycounty-tn.gov

Town hall meeting schedule:

-Sept. 3: Spring Hill High School
-Sept. 24: Mt. Pleasant High School
-Oct. 15: Hampshire Unit School
-Oct. 22: Santa Fe Unit School
-Nov. 5: Culleoka Unit School

I can’t find times for these meetings yet, only dates.

I’ve also forwarded info to the chairman for the Tennessee chapter of Backcountry Hunters and Anglers (BHA), so hopefully we can get a good turnout at these meetings.

they were going to try and do the fairgrounds on the park, but now are looking at the area off Bud Moore road, all those corn fields by the old house.

That sucks. That I’ll mess up a huge portion of the WMA I wonder how big the safety zone will be around those 400 acres?

Glad BHA is involved. Unfortunately this is just what many want for our public lands.

I don’t hunt that area often but it’s loaded with wildlife. I know a lot of people enjoy hunting that area.

Truly hope you guys can turn things around, but if TVA owns the land then $$$ will probably win out.

Maury County is trying to take 400+ acres of public land

Postby AT Hiker » Fri Aug 16, 2019 8:37 am

This is a common theme with Republicans. They have this distorted view of public land with a new scare tactic that likens it Socialism.

Some progress has been made but it appears to have taken several steps back. Now it’s hitting us here in TN, hopefully more people will recognize the importance of public land and stand up to this crap.

Thanks for sharing Catman, now use that YouTube platform and get the word out to your followers. Do your best to make it apolitical but good luck with it.

Waste of time and don't expect any help from the TWF or the TWRA. The TWF told me several things, what they would do, what was going to happen and basically nothing they said happened.

I raised all kinds of heck, was interviewed on TV on the local news, went to meetings, was told by the TWF they would try to stop the greenway, then was told land around the Poole Knobs campground that couldn't be hunted would be opened up to hunting in exchange for the land lost to the greenway, etc. The greenway was put in, as far as know there was no land opened up to hunting, a guard rail was put in along stones river rd to keep 4 wheelers out, actually seemed to bring in more 4 wheelers, it for sure did not stop them. Also, the guard rail cut off some of the best parking spots for hunting the WMA and fishing from the bank. My favorite spot to duck hunt for many years and I killed many deer out of the same spot, now has a greenway that is less than 100 yards from it. Wonder what happens when someone duck hunts the creek or is deer hunting on the WMA and the gun shots are heard. Not only affects Rutherford County but Davidson also.

every outdoorsman should be concerned. for hunters, it will only be a matter of time before good leasable land is gone due to ever increasing land values. now would be a good time to buy 250 acres if you plan on continue hunting.

I'm buying more as of today actually. It's not that I can readily afford it, but rather that I can't afford not to get it.

Better start hammering TVA, not the TWRA or the county.

Thanks buddy, I buy the property that adjoins my existing land, whenever it becomes available. It's a stretch putting together a transaction on a whim, as these transactions usually come up spur of the moment, as this one did, but if I let it slip by it'll be that much less i can access, with more opportunities for poachers and trespassers...and the ever present methheads, to hide out on wo my knowledge. Besides, it's still one of the best investments that one can make. I'll likely never build on it, just hunt and enjoy being out there whenever I want, but my kids will have something tangible after I'm gone to use as they see fit. :)

I agree 100%. Land that joins what you already own is always desirable. You never know when it may sell to a new owner that totally upsets the landscape and the only way to prevent that from happening is to buy it yourself if there is any possible way. Buying land is unsettling and takes you out of your comfort zone because of the amount of money usually involved, but in the long run it will always be a good investment. But beyond the financial gain, the emotional value is worth the trouble. Having your own place to do what you want on can't be given a $ value.
