ATV Help!

Postby deerfever » Sat Jan 12, 2019 11:34 am

I just bought a new ATV and was getting my other one ready to sell. I bought a Kawasaki bayou 250 brand new in 2003. It has been great! I went to start it and hear a clicking noise at the solenoid. I check the battery it is good. I then replace the solenoid and the starter. I still get the clicking noise. I have tried to jump it off , clicking noise! I can hand crank it and it runs just fine. Any thoughts? I want to get this settled before I sell the 4 wheeler as it has been a good one. Thanks for any help!

Starter relay. Under the seat near the battery. You should see a box with a couple fuse boxes there that is it. My 2001 Yamaha big Bear 400 has gone thru 2 already. Same noise sometimes it would start other it would not. Will get to not starting at all after a while not even the click. Check on Amazon, one from a dealer can run into several $ and last one I bought I found on Amazon for under $10.00 while Original factory from Yamaha was near $50.00

Thanks Big Ben! I thought of the yesterday after the starter was put on with same result. Is there any way to test it? Again that may be a stupid question . I am just wanting to make sure this time that I fix the actual problem instead of replacing parts that are good. One thing about it whoever buys it will get new parts and a box with spares! Lol

I found it was bad on mine by hearing the click with the seat off and took a guess that was the bad part and it was.

Good deal! The clicking comes from the solenoid with the seat off . I thought for sure that's what it was, just like I thought the starter. I have found that assembly but they are all around 40 that I have seen . I don't mind at all to spend it if that's the issue just trying to make sure this time. I am guessing that is the problem but could be wrong once again. I know it's nothing big ,it runs great with the hand start.

Thanks Ben! I have bought and replaced that solenoid already. I am talking about the assembly relay at this point. It is a round deal with 4 prongs that a wire harness plugs into to. I believe Kawasaki calls it the assembly relay, it is located right by the battery and the solenoid. I don't know if it will have anything to do with it or not. I get an arc when touching the post on the solenoid but the starter doesn't turn over.

That is what was doing the clicking buzzing noise on mine what look like what was in the picture. When I replaced it all was well. I figured Kawasaki and Yamaha would be the same. Doe's this look like the part your wanting to replace ?

The first part you showed is exactly where the clicking is coming from and I replaced it . Still clicks!

Clean the connections real good and make sure both the nuts are down tight. Check the fuses also. If it still does the same you might have got a bad part.

Sometimes, a battery can check good, but have a bad cell. How old is the battery?

I bought the battery in August. I have tried to use jumper cables also. I thought it may be the battery but it seems like it would jump off if it was. Again I am a novice and may be wrong with that statement.

My starter relay is having issues on my yamaha, but mine doesn't click. If that's the issue, you should be able to short the two terminals (use a screwdriver). If the 4 wheeler turns over, that's the issue. If it doesn't turn over, its something else. I ordered the relay but haven't replaced it yet. I'd say 30 percent of the time I have remove the seat and short it across the terminals (make sure switches are set to on position for starting).

Thanks Big Al! I tried that and I get a spark but no turn over. I am about to cave and take it somewhere to get looked at. The bad part is I am positive it is nothing major but I can't solve the problem. I do not want to try and sell it until it is fixed. I spoke to a guy today and guess I will let him look at it this week.

Sounds like a bad battery or a connection issue. Clean the battery terminals with a brush and some vinegar. It could also be a connection in the push button switch.
