Stupid physics question

Postby Deer Whisperer » Thu Jun 14, 2018 8:56 pm

Put two hot dogs in a pan of water and heat the water to boil. You will notice that the two dogs will always float together. You can take a couple of forks and separate them, hold everything still until everything is calm. When you release the dogs, they will float back together. You can turn the dogs so that they are 90 degrees from each other, and they will rotate around until they are side by side again.
All these observations were taken while the water was heating, but not boiling. I made no observations whe the water was cold - before heat was applied.
When the water started to boil, it was time to eat.

What is the scientific reason for the dogs always wanting to float together?

So what your saying is you watched 2 weeners go parallel.

The resident science genius is asleep, but I'll ask him in the morning. I suspect it has to do with surface tension and the water clinging to the hot dogs somehow creates a tiny force that pulls the dogs together. But that's just my (un)educated guess.

One hotdog has negative charge and the other positive charge. Opposites attract.

Convective currents in the water in the pot due to heating rise and cant go anywhere except toward the middle of the pot forcing the wieners together. The surface area along the sides of the weenies is greater than the ends to that would turn them parallel or side by side to each other. ...but their orientation in the pot or the direction the doggies point in the pot should be random around the perimeter of the pot.

Once the water boils, some of the convection exits the pot vertically in the form of steam, so the dogs may separate a little, but the direction they point should remain random.

I thought hot dogs oriented into a singel direction because in a gas flame the heat is generally around the edges of the pot, the heated water would rise and push the hotdogs out of its way. I thought.

Post are designed to heat evenly along the bottom, although I am sure you theory is somewhat valid.
