LED Garage Lights?

Pretty much anything you want to talk about!

LED Garage Lights?

Postby LanceS4803 » Wed Jun 13, 2018 9:51 pm

I have 6 light fixtures in my garage. Each 48" fixture has four T8 bulbs of 32W. The box of extra tubes says each is 2800 lumens. That's over 11,000 lumens!
Over the last year 4 have had the ballast go out. I'm done with these things and someone recommended LEDs.
Looking around, the closest I can find has 9500 lumen, and for the price of $138. That seems crazy expensive.
But then I see that I can keep my fixture, remove the ballast and install LED bulbs for $5 to $8 each.
Does this sound right?
Anyone switched over?

I converted some of mine to led think I had about 8 a build in them. I cut the ballast out and made one end hot and one neutral easy to do.

Does it work with any led bulb or do you have to buy a specific kind to go in them?

This is what I'm leaning towards.
Lots of videos on YT on how to convert the wiring. I went ahead and pulled the ballast cover off of one fixture and everything is easily accessible.

Look at this on eBay http://www.ebay.com/itm/202324968208

My brother in law put these in his garage and they are awesome. He mounted them directly to the bottom of the trusses in his pole barn.

I bought a 10 pack from Walmart.com for 90 bucks. I’ll try and find the link.

We swapped out 48 bulbs in our shop at work with these from Amazon. So far they have been great. The color of the light was different and that took a little getting used to, but the price was hard to beat.

I converted out kitchen flor light fixture to LED. Four flor bulbs to two LED bulbs. I got the LED bulbs from BeesLighting.com, about $8 each.

You're looking for LED Ballast Bypass bulbs. Use your old fixture, never change/swap bulbs again. Far less power, brighter and better CRI to boot.

Interesting thread: https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/sho ... p?t=278420

For new fixtures, I prefer the Sams Club/Honeywell 4500/5000 lumen shop lights. The 5000 lumen versions are better than 110 lumens/watt. I just put 10 of them up in my shop, see pic below. I also put two of them in my 2 car garage. Mo bettah light!

Can you put multiple together and using the light switch to turn them on and off?

Have changed out a bunch to LED.....the only way to go IMO.
Out of roughly 120 or so bulbs only have had one bulb go bad, it was replaced under warranty, no questions asked. I buy from local distibutor/store in town. There are a couple different version so be sure of what you go with!!
Some you have a +/- on ONE tomb stone and others are + on one end and - on the other.
Very easy to transition, just pay attention and note visibly in the fixture that they are LED cause if someone mistakenly puts a flouresent bulb back in tied to 120v she's gonna blow!!

Did my garage with them from Amazon $10 each. They turned out to be 6,000 or 6,500 I can't remember which, but they're really bright and I only have to run one bulb in each fixture and still have plenty of light. The ones I got could be wired either way, I did them double ended. It took longer to get the proper tools out and ladder than to do several of them.

Yes, they come with adapters were you can plug together 6 in a row. Then just either plug it into a plug wired to a switch, or cut off the plug and wire it into a junction box connected to a wall switch.

I have NEVER seen reviews that good. Basically 5 stars with 2,700 reviews. And the company responded to the bad reviews.
Pretty amazing.

That's the main reason I went with that brand. Once I got them, the instructions are well written and the lights work like a charm. I replaced all the ballasts in my fixtures, but they make the lights that don't require that mod. It only took 15 minutes to modify them.
