Rattling antlers

Postby MickThompson » Sat Oct 26, 2019 9:38 am

I found this buck dead several years ago. Too far gone to get all the way down to the bases and really, not much of a base. So I just sawed them off, tried not to gag, and forgot them in a box in the closet. I finally decided I needed a set of rattling antlers. I evened up the cut bases with a belt sander (smells like burning hair btw) and drilled out the pith. They are epoxied into the handles with a 1/4” dia piece of all thread. I’ve never done much rattling, but I can do it in style now!

Looks good! A lot of times as antlers age (particularly those pick ups in the woods) they dry out to where they sound "tinny". I've heard you can soak them in milk to remedy that somewhat.

They look good. Never heard that about the milk. Curious, if you soak them let us know.
