Daughter's a/c not cooling

Postby Gray Ghost » Sun Jul 03, 2016 8:55 am

I gave my daughter our '03 4Runner when she turned 16 and all is great except AC won't cool. Have tried getting it charged but it heats up in a couple of days - even used the charger w/leak stop. Mechanic speculates it's a leak under the dash and said it's gonna take about $1,000 to fix. Does this sound right?

I'm no mechanic but could be a number of things including the compressor. Sounds like you do have a freon leak. They make that freon with red coloring that may tell you where it's leaking. Compressors do where out after 200 thousand miles. You can always get a second opinion too. Good luck.

A grand sounds steep but I work on my own stuff. I would think if it was a leak under the dash in the cabin you would definitely smell it, or I did when I had a cracked line.

Thats a Negative...
Although a leak in the evaporator isn't an easy job depending on how long it takes to remove.

AC work always demand high price this time of the year.

My wife's Equinox has a leak in the condenser. I've read it's a grand to fix at the dealer. The front clip has to come off to change.

Are all of the leak stop bottles the same? I've seen some that 'guarantee' the leak will be sealed.

My truck was leaking bad at the evaporator core...it was soaked in the green dye they put in to detect it. They would recharge it and it would be hot again in about 5-10 days. Cost $1200 at midas, next cheapest place I could find was $1500....they have to take the entire dash out. Most of the time those recharge things you buy at autozone aren't worth a flip.

First you've got to locate the leak, it could be much simpler than what the mechanic speculated. That's the worse case scenario.

I bought an A/C manifold and a vacuum pump.
AC work can be a pain, but I've fixed 2 vehicles myself recently, with less than $200 combined in parts and refigerant, and would have spent at least 3 grand if I'd taken them to a shop.
My sons frontier has a high pressure hose leak, going to spend about $150 on it in a month our 2.
Of course, the shop told him he needed a compressor, and about $1500 to fix.
Hooked it up to the manifold, vacuumed it, put in dye and tested, boom- hose leak, compressor is fine.
IMO, auto AC repair is the biggest "shady" deals perpetrated on the unknowing car owner.
