Anybody up to a "real" Hawken build?

Postby Wobblyshot1 » Wed Jul 15, 2020 12:17 pm

Thought I would try to build a sure nuff mountain man's Hawken gun. The parts have been languishing around the shop for too many years. I've got both of John D Baird's classic books on the subject to use as guides.

:super: mighty nice piece of wood ya got to work with, makes me nervous just thinking about a cut, I really like the little grinders and different attachments for them

That's a piece of very hard sugar maple with exceptional curl from one end to the other. I know my chisels are sharp but you have doubts when you try to make a cut on this stock. This is going to be fun.

So what’s the plan on a barrel? I’ve been wanting a Hawken with a 1/28 for sabots.

It's a round ball twist .50 caliber 1" straight octagon. I've had this barrel for a long time and any maker's marks are gone. I'm leaning toward thinking its either a old Montana or even a Green River. I got real lucky on the lock. Found it for sale at Friendship in a bin full of lesser quality locks. It's a Ron Long-Denver and had to fork over $50 for it...a steal.

Trigger plate inletted. Then assemble triggers and afix trigger guard. Finally, the whole unit is installed while checking for any binding...its now working smoothly.

The next step will be to drill and tap for the two tang to trigger plate screws. I've already drilled and tapped for the lock bolt. Then to the under lugs and barrel keys.

Hope everyone has a wonderful Labor Day weekend.
