First ATV Purchase? Advice?

So for the first time in my 30 years of life I've decided to seriously buy an ATV this year. My budget is around $3,000-$3,500. I just want something to use to disc small plots, haul deer, and maybe some farming stuff. From my research I focused mainly on reliability and Honda and Yamaha seem to be a good direction. 4x4 and Fuel injected engine are a must. Other than that, any advice on things I should know while shopping and prior to purchase is greatly appreciated.

HONDA is the only choice. Taken care of it will last a lifetime and they hold their value very well. I have a 2016 420 Rancher and its within that price range, or just a little more.

Buy a Honda and thank us later. Nothing wrong with Yamaha--they build great engines but they're not quite on par with the Honda's when it comes to ATV's. Honda ATV's are easier to work on than Yamaha's too.

Pulling an implement, 500 cc minimum.

Buy any brand you want. As long as it's a Honda.

The bigger they are, the less maneuverable they are as well. This plays a huge role when trying to retrieve deer in wooded areas. That said, I have a Honda 700 Rincon, and miss my Honda 300 FourTrax terribly when it comes to getting a deer out of the woods.

Well I know where there is a 2014 Honda Rancher 4x4. It is being sold at an estate sale. I may be able to get it for under $3,000.

If you are seriously looking at pulling a disc or implements with it you need 500 cc or more. I had a 500 and it really struggled pulling some items.

That's good to know. Does Honda make anything bigger

Honda does make a Rincon that is bigger than 500cc. I have a Foreman and love it. Hondas do not have as big an engine as others or the bells and whistles. It will be a solid machine that lasts a long time though. I would look for a used Foreman or Rubicon. You can find them at decent prices. It should do anything you want to do.

No comparison between a 1000 and a 420. But since you went there, ask me i 5 yrs which bike holds up better. :smash:

You got the basics down. If pulling an implement - I'd get the biggest you can find. Honda is most reliable imo. As you already know - DEFINITELY want fuel injected. You will love it.

I have a Honda Rancher 350 4wd. I also have a Groundhog Max ATV disk. It handles it, but it's a load. Depending on the size and type of implement a 500 would be nice. That Rancher may be all you need though.

So at what mileage would someone see and say ***** that's too many. Could a 1000 mile machine be equivalent to a 100,000 mile car? 2000-200,000, etc.

My 2003 Rancher has over 2500 miles on it. Doesn't smoke. Purrs like a kitten.

I would also take into account who the primary rider was, where those miles were driven, and if it appears it was well-cared for or not.

I recommend Honda Foreman 500 4wd ES or Manual. My 2005 HAS never left me stuck or required anything other than routine maintenance. I have used it for hunting, scouting, pulling logs, pulling a wagon loaded with fire wood, some pleasure riding (but not much) I bought it new has 1100miles on it. They are a little cold natured though.
