I have one "compression" type base layer that I use. Since I have a draw hunt in a few days I'll need a second pair to wear the second day. I will just wear two separate pair of hunting clothes instead of washing after I'm home the first night.

Any recommendations on a base layer for when it's hot as bananas?

First lite wick from what I've been reading. Expensive. I have the furnace ones. They are excellent

Not trying to be rude, but where are you hunting that will need baselayers anytime soon?

Not sure where he's hunting but for years I have worn lightweight polyester/spandex base layers to keep ticks off while wicking moisture. I don't get hot or have clothes sticking to me.

Ive been using Enduraskin for years! They feel very cool to the skin in hot weather! For those that dont know, the Enduraskin has silver threads woven into the fabric that kills bacteria.I think hospitals use silver on burn victims to kill bacteria!

Great question! It's not for warmth, it's moisture wicking, anti-chafing compression type underlayer. Feels great and it helps to keep you cool and comfortable.

I've been thinking about getting another pair of base layers. I may give this a shot. Is this Redhead brand? That's all I found on a quick search

yes and a lot of other manufacturers are using the Visa Endurance fabric now but red head brand is cheaper and very well made. i bought the all weather set in 2006 and the thicker cold weather set in 2008 and still use both. no ripped seams and the odor killer still works after a few hundred washes. you can use the all weather set in real cold weather if you wear fleece or wool long johns over it.

Kuiu and first light have terrific merino base options. But reading the comments, most folks here aint forking the money. I'd rather have a quality garment I can wear for many days without washing.

Does not get any better than first lite, it is kinda expe sive but if you want to be comfortable at it's best, also scent free, spend the money. I tell everyone I hunt with to at least give itd a try. You won't be disappointed. If you are for some strange reason then sell it.

I've tried about all of it through the years. I have went totally to First Lite. The older I get the more comfortable I like to be. It's expensive but I will pay to be comfortable in the heat and the cold and it delivers.

Sierra Trading post and REI sometimes have good merino base layers on sale, of course First Lite will have a good sale around Black Friday.

What brand? I say try to find some cheap, lite weight merino wool. If you discover you like it then spring for some quality stuff.

The first lite socks and boxers are worth every penny and you can wear them year round.

You can also get away with wearing merino wool for extended days. I've done many 3-5 days trips with just two pairs of socks and boxers, just alternate everyday...wear a pair in and pack a extra pair.

HANG DRY the wool, if not your wife will inherit them.

Spend the money. The base layer is the most important layer for warmth and moisture wicking which keeps you dry and warm, IMO.. I have had very good luck with UA Coldgear compression seems to be better and more comfortable. I have Smartwool merino base layers that may be slightly warmer but still prefer the UA unless its extremely cold.
